Linda Nieuwenhuizen had worked as a high school teacher in Swedish and social studies for just over ten years when she suddenly became seriously ill in 2014. She had been enthusiastic about the possibilities of wireless technology but had not been informed that the technology emitted harmful microwave radiation.
Linda, who has been active in local politics in Lidköping for 20 years, is passionate about environmental and sustainability issues. For four years she was second vice-chair of the environmental and health protection committee, she has served on the city council and on the municipal executive for several terms. But today she is on long-term sick leave and has difficulty participating in social and political life because she can no longer tolerate the radiation from all the wireless technology that has invaded virtually all environments and public premises.
The school where she works has 180 routers for WiFi/wireless networks, the more than 2,000 students each have a wirelessly connected computer and the vast majority also have a smartphone. In addition, there are wireless DECT phones in the office landscape and in the administration. Overall, the radiation is very high. A smartphone today regularly sends pulses of radiation when it is turned on even if it is not actively used for internet connection or calls.
Linda was one of those who was very enthusiastic about the new technology and believed in its possibilities. She also believed that the technology was safe and was convinced that if there were health risks, the technology would not have been introduced in the school.
– I was a digital monster. I was also an inspirational teacher for digital technology and in that role I praised the possibilities of wireless technology.
Wireless technology had also invaded the home. Wireless network, wireless fire alarm, five members of the family each had their own mobile phone plus game consoles, there were “smart TVs”, tablets and other digital tools.
It was at work that Linda became acutely ill from the technology's microwave radiation on an "inspiration day" in early September 2014 in connection with the introduction of just over 100 new student computers. Linda then had a severe migraine attack and a fever that lasted for almost six months.
After that "inspiration day", Linda has not been able to return to her previous job. She has tried, but it is not possible as she quickly develops acute migraines, acute stomach and intestinal problems and muscle pain. Dizziness, visual field disorders and heart fibrillation are also part of the symptoms. After the "inspiration day", she also had severe sleep problems and problems with anxiety, depression, exhaustion and extreme fatigue. Her face was covered in a rash, especially around the mouth.
She tried to return to work in December 2014 at 25%, but it was not possible because the symptoms returned immediately.
At first, Linda did not understand that it was the microwave radiation from all the wireless technology that caused her ill health. She was examined from head to toe and the doctors claimed that there were no physical problems. For that reason alone, it was assumed that Linda's problems were psychological.
Linda was therefore initially given antidepressant medication that the doctor said would solve her health problems. But the medication led to worsening sleep problems. She only slept three hours a night, which soon led to total exhaustion and the medication was removed. She was then allowed to try cognitive behavioral therapy, but the therapist concluded that CBT had no effect. Linda herself was worried that she had a brain tumor or suffered from schizophrenia, among other things because of her neurological symptoms. She still did not suspect the microwave radiation.
It was only almost a year after falling ill, in the summer of 2015, that Linda understood that her illness was due to microwave radiation from wireless technology. She was on vacation with her family at the time and they were living in a caravan. In the caravan, which was completely without electricity and wireless technology, she quickly got better. The rash around her mouth disappeared. She also received confirmation of her suspicion when she visited a bathhouse where a lot of people were using mobile phones and immediately became acutely ill.
She told a doctor about her suspicions that she was sick from microwave radiation, who replied:
– “You should turn that off.”
It was the wrong track, according to the overconfident doctor. Linda then changed health centers and was able to see another doctor who was more humble about the idea that microwaves could be involved.
With the insight into the cause of the symptoms, the home in the countryside was cleared of wireless technology and after a while Linda felt much better. She also came into contact with the doctor Ulrika Åberg who initiated treatment with mineral and vitamin therapy (which is in accordance with science and proven experience and the new European medical guidelines EuropaEM EMF Guidelines). The treatment has further improved Linda's health.
Today Linda works 25% from home and the school is in the process of shielding a workroom against the radiation that falls in from a mast nearby. She is still affected when she visits Lidköping and if she is in the city for half a day she feels very bad.
Linda has had her eyes opened and through her own experiences understood the connection between radiation from wireless technology and its health consequences. Today, she wants to help others, so that they are not also affected, especially children and young people. In recent years, Linda has helped some students with remedial education because the students felt unwell as soon as they were at school. The thought gnaws at the thought that these students were also sensitive and damaged by the radiation. All attempts to adapt the students have been fruitless. However, they have not thought about all the radiation from wireless technology, but have groped for all possible other explanations.
– It is a huge disaster for these students to be excluded from school. They are constantly told that it is something psychological, that they suffer from delusions, while the cause is most likely that microwaves have rained down on them.
Linda also has colleagues who are unwell and on sick leave. Three of her students in the last ten years have had head tumors: one behind the eye, another in the brain and a third in the neck. That's an unusual number for a single teacher, she says. She also has acquaintances who get cancer in unusual places and brain tumors.
Linda is deeply critical of how the authorities have handled the issue. Society's welfare system is there to help people, but in this issue they have turned their backs on the people even though it is their mission to help and protect the public's interests:
- As a microwave victim in Sweden today, you are not considered to be suffering from what you are actually suffering from, which in itself is extremely offensive. Not only do you suffer from severe ill health and your life situation is put on hold, you also do not receive adequate treatment and proper advice because the medical profession in Sweden generally knows nothing about EMF-related ill health. The doctors who understand the connections do not dare to certify it because they then risk being scolded by the National Board of Health and Welfare. In other words, it is an absurd situation.
What do you say about the fact that the health effects and symptoms that you have suffered from have been known and described for a long time?
– I find it incomprehensible that the medical profession and the insurance company do not treat this as a medical condition. It is an incredible shame that they constantly describe what I and many others have suffered from as something other than what it really is. As soon as you become aware that you cannot tolerate the technology, you are said to have "delusions." I think it is exactly the opposite. It is the medical profession that suffers from delusions and it is before you understand the connection to the radiation that you, as an affected person, suffer from delusions that it is psychological, etc.
What do you think about the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority claiming that there are no health risks with wireless networks and wireless technology?
- That is not true, it is rather wishful thinking and wishful thinking has no place in the exercise of authority. The symptom picture has been known and described since the 1970s.
What do you think about the technology being introduced on a broad front in schools and preschools?
- It is painful, especially when you understand how harmful it is. You are playing a game of chance with an entire generation of children and also all the other people in society.
What do you think about the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority only making one measurement a year 2009 of radiation in school environments?
– They would have to take thousands of measurements in different places and in different environments. They could come to our school and take measurements. The measurement result depends on how many students have computers on and how many have the apps running on their mobile phones, how many mobile towers, DECT phones and WiFi routers are nearby and how strong these are.
